SAO PAULO -- Three days before Brazilian elections, President Fernando Henrique Cardoso continues to hold a comfortable lead in his bid for a second term in office, according to a poll released Thursday.
A joint poll by the Ibope research group, Globo television and Estado newspaper showed Cardoso with 47% of the the vote, while his primary challenger, leftist candidate Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, has 24%. Those figures are unchanged from the previous poll two weeks ago.
Other candidates would win 11% of the vote, while 10% of those surveyed said they were still unsure and 7% would hand in blank votes.
The latest poll, which includes a sample of 3,000 voters from around the country, indicates that Cardoso would win reelection in the first round on Oct. 4. No margin of sampling error was provided.
To avoid a second-round vote, a candidate must receive an absolute majority of valid votes, which excludes blank ballots.
