E,

Thanks for sharing your history, I'm always curious to know how people arrive at their belief systems.

I too grew up in the south, and am aware of the depth of Christian conviction you referred to, and the resulting intolerance it can breed. As I was reading your post it struck me to substitute "white" for "christian" and "black" for "atheist", or"Jew" and "Palestenian" or "Serbian" and "Croatian", "capitalist" and "communist", "Tutsi" and "Hutu" . . .

These groups too have said "extremely cruel things" to one another, "would hit you and scream at you and spit at you and beat you up and pull your hair and throw your books on the ground and try to get other children not to play with you and perform whatever other vicious cruelties their little _______ minds could devise . . .", and their virulent behavior toward one another extended far beyond childhood.

I believe all of humanity is indictable for this kind of behavior, and I promise you that if Atheists were a majority in some culture somewhere (and they may well be) some other non-atheist group would point an accusatory finger at them--charging them with the same discriminatory behavior you have the Christians performing. Weren't Christians and Jews alike discriminated against in the atheist Soviet Union?

Does one's atheist beliefs somehow elevate one above the moral fray of the great unwashed to an ethical plane where the highest vision of our humanity can be achieved? Has this ever been demonstrated?

Humanity's biggest enemy is in the mirror--not at the end of our pointing fingers.

Rick
