I have always wondered what was "in it" for Mensa members--when I was in high school there were a brother and sister who rode on my school bus. The sister and the parents were Mensa members who were active in club meetings; somehow the brother couldn't make it in. It seemed odd to me then that the family was willing to alienate the boy in such a way and I felt sorry for him then. Now, of course, it seems even worse.

Of course this story has nothing to do with you. I feel that I understand the emotional satisfaction earned from forming and decoding clever puzzles. But there is something emotionally confused in a social organization which excludes membership on the basis of ability; it sees to me to reflect a need to be recognized as not only smart, but as SMARTER. You might take a moment and reflect if your behavior here exhibits this quality. To many of us it would seem you waste your time here when there is beauty to contemplate and people to love. But surely your time isn't wasted here: you fulfill an emotional need.

I guess that means you're smarter.
