First things First. Happy B-day to Tomato Man. Excellent write-up Wally. And Jim W, I do acknowledge your knowledge of all those hi-tech transmission technologies. But for FNTN for now at least, ISDN will have to do and it is readily available all over the US. Maybe they can get the Singapore and Hong Kong markets with VDSL later on as well. Now that was just the video part of the business. I am still waiting to hear more about the Intranet information business. Harry

Ouch! My prejudice in bandwidth mediums shows. Let me say the Telcos over pricing of ISDN is fine for business customers, though for most residential customers it is priced over their budget. Had the US Telcos embraced ISDN 10 years ago, like the European Telcos did, perhaps everyone in the US might be able to afford it. The US Telcos are getting an arm and a leg for 128KPs, is it any wonder they were slow to adopt ADSL 2Mbs - 8Mbps, for a cost of $50 a month.
I should have keep my Residential Bandwidth prejudices out of the post, as it has nothing to do with Business Customers of FNTN.

Does anyone else feel it might be a good idea to get Siemens, Hutchison and FNTN together? Hong Kong is the Financial Center for Asia!

In order to compete in the fixed network market and introduce new telecommunications services in Hong Kong, Hutchison has installed a Siemens intelligent network (IN). It is scheduled to start operating on July 1, 1995. To be able to offer its customers the best possible services for the introduction of the intelligent network, Hutchison conducted extensive studies and investigations covering all the world's major manufacturers.
The IN will be operating in the background in an already existing network. It allows the provider to supply users with value-added services that offer additional facilities beyond pure speech transmission. On a broad basis, Hutchison intends to offer its customers around 40 services, some available for the first time anywhere in the world, and never available in such a wide variety. w2.siemens.de

Official figures showed that the number of German companies with subsidiaries in Hong Kong has increased by 20 percent since 1990. Hong Kong is now the seventh-largest trading partner with Germany with a trade volume of 10 billion U.S. dollars annually. Heinrich v. Pierer, head of Germany's largest electronics company Siemens, today also voiced confidence in Hong Kong's future. In an interview with Xinhua, Pierer said that the success of Hong Kong is based on a liberal economic system, and the flexibility as well as the enterpreneurship of its population which can be now combined with the economic expansion of the mainland. "There emerges an additional potential," he added. Pierer, who is also chairman of the Asian-Pacific Committee of German Economy, noted that Hong Kong's return will also certainly further deepen the existing close trade and economic relations between China and Germany. According to Pierer, Siemens has managed to achieve an average annual growth rate of 40 percent in the past 10 years in Hong Kong and is planning to expand its presence there in the belief that its business with Chinese firms in Hong Kong and with the surrounding areas will expand further. hk1997.china.com
