<There was no religion, no formal prayer in that ballroom -- there was only love, and in that love God dwelled.>
I imagine that the Christians who so tormented us, and their mothers who whispered to us that we were going to burn in hell forever, would have been entirely at home, a blithe part of the circle of love in that room. And also I imagine that if, by coincidence, all the participants in this loving exercise happened to be atheists of a philosophical or meditating bent (atheists can mediate, of course), or just a humanist one, the elevated, beautiful, inspiring feelings that filled the room would still have been felt in full measure.
Of course I don't argue that atheists are exempt from cruelty and meanness (though I can't resist mentioning that the last time I saw a statistic on this, there were fewer inmates in the prison system who identify themselves as atheists than there are members of any other "sect," (and this is relative to their representation in the population.)
Atheists can be as monstrous as Christians, it is, sadly, so true. |
