Jbe. I do have a deep respect for you—we first met over on the grammar thread, where your clear thinking and elegant expression always impressed me—and for the upset you feel about Chechnya. I would, however, like to make two points. First, not having done something in Chechnya is not an argument against doing it now in Kosovo. (Whether intervention is the appropriate action is a rather different debate.) Second, I don't think that we can escape the fact that there are pressures that can be put on the Serbs that can't be put on the Russians for practical reasons (i.e., the Russians have nuclear weapons and are dangerously unstable anyway).
