AER Energy Announces Development of Non-rechargeable Zinc-air Battery Prototype
Prototype 6 volt battery combines six primary zinc-air cells with patented Diffusion Air Manager
ATLANTA, Oct. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- AER Energy Resources, Inc. (Nasdaq: AERN - news) today announced development of its first non-rechargeable (primary) zinc-air battery prototype. The prototype contains six primary zinc-air cells with a Diffusion Air Manager incorporated in the battery case. The AER Energy six volt battery has a volume of 0.20 liters, a weight of 235 grams and a capacity of 50 watt hours. This volume is similar to that of three D size alkaline cells but approximately one-half of the weight and more than twice the energy.
The prototype is unique because it demonstrates the performance capability of zinc-air batteries when AER Energy's patented Diffusion Air Manager technology is combined with small primary zinc-air cells. Batteries using this combination of technologies can exhibit high power, high charge retention, long storage life and low cost. AER Energy believes these batteries may be suitable for use in a variety of handheld consumer electronic products such as camcorders, handheld computers, cellular telephones, digital cameras, cordless telephones, instruments, audio devices and lighting products.
''When AER Energy demonstrated a major brand of a camcorder powered by a prototype battery which has its Diffusion Air Manager, it was clear that they have made some great strides in the development of their primary zinc-air technology,'' commented Joel Tax, Santa Clara Consulting Group. ''Their prototype, which is about the size of a couple of jumbo chewing gum packs, really shows the energy density of zinc-air batteries. Users would love to have a long runtime battery that they wouldn't need to think about recharging before using it in a camcorder, handheld computer, cellular phone or other high drain consumer electronic device.''
''During the last six to nine months, a large portion of our research and development resources have been focused on converting our design concepts into a primary battery prototype,'' stated Dr. Lawrence A. Tinker, vice president of engineering at AER Energy. ''Previous test results were based on laboratory fixtures that simulated the performance of our Diffusion Air Manager. With a fully functional 6 volt battery prototype, we have been able to confirm our theoretical calculations and previous test results.''
''With simple tooling and fixture changes on our rechargeable pilot production line, we have developed the ability to produce small volumes of the new primary zinc-air cells and batteries for internal testing and future sampling to potential strategic partners and OEMs,'' said R. Dennis Bentz, vice president of manufacturing at AER Energy.
AER Energy's patented Diffusion Air Manager consists of openings that are configured as tubes to admit air into the battery enclosure and a small fan to draw air through the tubes. With proper design, the tubes minimize the diffusion of air into and out of the battery during storage and eliminate the need to seal or close the battery by a door mechanism. The company believes the Diffusion Air Manager is a simple, low-cost method of improving the storage life of zinc-air batteries. In addition, primary zinc-air batteries generally cost less than rechargeable batteries because there is no charging or charge termination circuitry required.
AER Energy currently holds 28 United States patents, 9 of which apply to zinc-air battery assembly and air management techniques. The Company also has 16 United States patents pending, 7 foreign patents issued and 24 foreign patent filings.
AER Energy Resources, Inc. is engaged in the development and commercialization of high energy density zinc-air batteries that provide long, continuous runtime for portable electronic products. AER Energy's patented Diffusion Air Manager technology can provide primary and rechargeable zinc-air batteries with long in-service storage life and potentially allows these batteries to serve a variety of portable electronic products such as camcorders, handheld computers, and cellular telephones.
