ATT stated during cc(Bank One, ATT and IBM) that pure IP is unlikely and ATM is technology of choice for backbone.Look at LU, why thay bought Yuri, why SBC is going with ATM, why C&W and others. ATM is not a medicine for evrything but is and will be key technology for future networks.CSCO is also working very hard on good ATM platform(ref. last cc with J.Chambers).
