I bite the bullet and ordered a new Dell Laptop. Now I have to worry if I should have gotten the DVD. I figure it's going to cost so much to buy movies to use it and I don't play many games. I see where MS Encarta is now on DVD. Have you all tried it? When do we have to upgrade to DVD?

CD was a luxury, and now you'd be crazy not to have one as every new piece of software comes on CD. To get floppies, you'll have to load as many as 20 for some programs. Will we need 2 or 3 CD's?

I suspect that many programs will start coming with much more slick interactive tutorials. No more manuals. Do we follow the trend of going online to get help vs a really good DVD based manual. If you add audio and video to a manual, the internet would be very slow.

Can a PC use DIVX encoded movies?

I was told that a DVD can send a signal readable by both American and European TV formats. As you probably know, there are 2 incompatible TV systems. A video tape made here can't be view on a European TV.

In my case, I travel a lot and the thought of not being able to use it here or their makes the DVD seem less useful. But if it really works on all TV formats, it's more interesting?

I wonder if we'll see those multi CD music packages like the Beatles or Bob Dylan's greatest hits coming on one DVD disk.

Anyway, I decided to save the extra $200 and go with a 24x CD. Think I'm being short sighted?

Regards,

Mark

PS Are you still dictating or did you go back to hunt and peck? I'm not sure whether to get L&H or Dragon. I tend to think Dragon is better, but I'd like to know L&H for investment purposes. What do you think?
