Say what? I don't get it.

Rude:

Could you kindly elaborate on this please as I fail to understand your argument.I tellya why?

1."IDC reports on sales by manufacturer, not sales to customers"

Huh?
Who are they selling it to then if not the customers? Are you saying only sales of units (servers in this case) by manufacturers are reported and sales of servers by the channels are not reported in the case of CPQ,HP and IBM? If so what's the % of total sales by the manufacturer or the channels? Are we to take it that when Dell sells 1 server CPQ sells 2,ie one by them directly and one by the channel? If this is so why is IDC widely quoted by the biz press and their customers shelling out top dollars for their skewed and worthless research ? If IDC research has no merit then shouldn't they have gone out of biz a long time ago?

2."But in CPQ's case, they were in the process of working down channel inventory by holding back shipments (and sales) to the channel."

More 'huh?

If this is true how is the problem of inventory build up solved as it seems to me that they are merely shifting the problem from one place and brining it closer to home. Sure they might have reduced the inventory level at the channels but since you said they are 'holding back shipments/sales' I am assuming they still have the products but are holding the units at the factory warehouse. If this is so it just doesn't make any sense unless I misinterpret your comments.

3."What this means is that the share numbers were all skewed by what amounts to under-reporting of the top 3 players."

Assuming this is correct why are the companies coming out with BOLD-faced press releases of their own to counter the false reporting by IDC or suing IDC for malfeasance?

Anyway these are some of the questions I have, hope you don't mind me asking them.If what you say is true I'll have to take these reports with a grain of salt until the numbers from the respective companies are released in their quarterly reports.
