Simply, Dell is growing, but not at Compaq's expense.
Correct. A few years ago Dell was reactive to Compaq's every move in a way that suggested jealousy as much as strategy. I believe Dell has entered a new phase where the goal is to be computer supplier to the world. It's not just to get by Compaq anymore, it hasn't been for maybe the last two years. I don't think Michael Dell will be satisfied until you can walk down a gravel street in Bali and see Dell computers in the shops and homes.

It's not that Compaq doesn't matter anymore. It's just that competing with them is a means to an end and not the goal anymore. It is more likely that Michael Dell will build the company until it is worth more than Microsoft is to Gates. (Or at least try).
