Re: "1997 was a terrible year . . ." in the Annual Report: I felt just the opposite. I even wrote Bob F. a letter telling him how much I admired the approach he was taking to establish "the new Informix," and the inspiration to write him really came from that exact line you refer to.

Listen, if you didn't know when you got that report that IFMX had had a terrible year, you would have had to have been blind. And if B.F. had tried to paint it otherwise, he wouldn't have seemed any different from Phil White. I think, *under the circumstances*, being the first one to come out and say that IFMX had messed up, and messed up badly, was just about the smartest the B.F. could have done.
