Workplace Purchases of PCs Stay Strong

August Shows 40%+ Growth

The latest data from the ZD Market Intelligence Index of Workplace PC Purchases shows that August was another strong month. Overall, customer purchases of PCs were up 40% over August of 1997, which is the second month in a row that the index has topped the 1.4 level. This index is a measure of current month sales divided by the same month last year.

What is interesting is that some of the key market segments are experiencing resurgent growth that is showing hope for an even stronger fourth quarter than many expected, even a couple of months ago. For example, small business has regained it's momentum and is showing increasingly strong growth and appears to be on another "up" cycle going into Q4. Doubtless that more aggressive pricing, coupled with a plethora of programs from the major vendors that have been directed at this segment are the reason for such a substantial increase.

Large business has also become much more acquisitive in the last couple of months. Although the larger firms had been in a flat growth mode through the first half of the year, it's likely that some resolution to some of their Y2K issues, along with the fact that NT 5.0 is now much close to reality has spurred buying in recent months.

Needless to say, the fact that the workplace PC buyers are showing things getting better as we move into the critical Q4 selling season is a major positive factor for the industry. There was some doubt in the May/June timeframe as to whether or not the buying activity was going to turn down again, or rebound. Based on this most recent data it looks like the trend has turned.
