No arguments with you there at all. But through all these cases there runs a thread of ideological certainty. You are absolutely right that sometimes these compelling ideologies are not religiously based. (Although it's also not an accident that Communism is sometimes called a "secular religion". The same sense of total belief that accompanies some of the most zealous religious believers can be present.)

I think a whole lot more of the world's worst atrocities have been committed in the name of zealous ideologies, than by amoral advantage seekers.

And really the most important point I think is this. Balance, and also some respect for multiple points of views, is important in assuring moderate behavior.

Zealotry does indeed repel me.
