grf fan,
I agree with you. I don't see LU walking in and dominating the data world. I had 2 encounters with their company, and both of them left me feeling that Lucent was really AT&T with a bad attitude. The Company I work for bought a new phone system from Lucent. (75 phones)Everything went well. I then tried to get a modem from them to hook up 1 PC. I had to call an 800 # to order it. The guy on the other end asked if I needed digital or analog. I told him the phone system I had so he could figure it out. He ordered the modem for me. ($480 plus installation) Came in 5 days. Called him back to see about installation. Found that I had to order installation from another 800#. 13 days later an installer showed up, took one look at the modem, said it was the wrong modem and I had to send it back and get a digital modem, and left. After 4 phone calls I got to send the modem back and get the digital modem. 17 days later another installer showed up and told me you couldn't hook a digital modem to an analog system, and was about to leave. I made him wait while I called the 800#. The 800 guy told me the installer was wrong and to go ahead and install it. An argument ensued between them with me as the go between on the phone. The installer wouldn't talk to the guy on the other end. I finally hung up, the installer told me to call them back and order the right modem. Then he took the modem and left. I ordered a seperate phone line from Ameritech and used a $50 modem.

I won't go into the other instance, which involved adding 1 more phone to the system. Surfice to say it took 7 1/2 weeks and 5 service calls with a whole lot of arguing with installers.

If they become the dominant player in data transmission, the Internet won't be build out until your grandchildren retire.

Jim
