Doug APCC product is much more than the ave. surge supressor. It regulates more efficiently the electrical supply coming into your machine and will power your machine for a given time if the power in your home is somehow lost. Therefore it performs several functions one of which is it gives you time to shut down without lossing any of your work and two (most importantly) it protects your hard drive from power surges. Believe me, you don't want to loose your hard drive. That comes from the voice of experience. ht david
