I don't want to support any system with my tax dollars which comes with religious dogma, Michael. I believe in the complete separation of church and state. So I don't support school vouchers. I also believe it is a myth that very many poor urban parents will really benefit very much from vouchers, which typically would cover only the grimmest, poorest quality church-basement kind of schools. Good Catholic schools cost thousands more per year than vouchers would ever cover. So it is really a tax break for affluent parents who would get my money to send their children to private schools.

I don't know what you are talking about with the sports comment. The Catholic schools here have much more extensive sports programs than any of the public schools, including swimming pools on campus. Catholic colleges are also very sports oriented.

What I don't understand is why some public schools are good, and some are just horrible. I would want to analyze that and make every effort to offer quality public schools to all children. There is really no excuse for this, except that a lot of people have given up on the idea. But good public schools are the very basis of a civilized and equitable society.
