Christine, I have read both sides of this debate fairly extensively. Vouchers aren't a panacea, but in nearly every place they have been tried, children received a far better education than if it hadn't. That to me is the bottom line, and what the NEA cannot refute. Never will you read in any papers that the quality of education declined after going to vouchers. So what exactly are people afraid of?

Experiments need to take place on a grand scale. I would also like to see voluntary school uniforms adopted. In Long Beach where it was tried on a large scale, the reduction in violence has been pretty dramatic. Maslow said it best, safety needs must be taken care of in order to reach higher levels of actualization. All too often, our schools are battle grounds of violence where children and teachers fear for their very life.
