Newbridge has not won a major new carrier contract for quite some time, I believe--most of their carrier customers were acquired years ago when the ATM market was in its infancy
Not true:
1. KANATA, Ontario, August 26, 1998 -- Newbridge Networks today announced an agreement with SBC Operations Inc. to provide MainStreetXpress™ 36170 Multiservices Switches. Newbridge also will provide SBC with a MainStreetXpress 46020 Network Manager and MainStreetXpress 48020 MultiNetwork Service Controller. The three-year agreement is valued at over $300 million.
2. KANATA, Ontario, September 22, 1998 -- Newbridge Networks has been awarded a multi-million dollar contract to supply the Companys flagship asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) internetworking solution to provide a new broadband managed network infrastructure for Telkom South Africa. The initial agreement between Newbridge and Telkom South Africa, representing a significant portion of the carriers $160 million reinvestment program, covers a two-year period, with an option to extend the relationship to 10 years.
AT&T is the only example of a large service provider switching ATM equipment suppliers
I think Telkom SA switched networks, and I'm wondering about SBC too:
Andy Bull, General Manager, Newbridge Networks, South Africa, stated: "We are delighted that Telkom South Africa has selected our ATM equipment based on our key strengths of network management and service flexibility. The new infrastructure will provide Telkom South Africa with a core ATM network that satisfies immediate needs and has the flexibility to grow and evolve to meet evolving customer requirements. Our CSI architecture provides Telkom South Africa with a practical and effective path for delivering additional differentiated IP VPN offerings."
In my opinion, LU will not purchase ASND. It can get an ATM solution and more (LMDS Broadband Wireless, Cambrian DWDM) for less at NN.
