Well Michael, in light of the historical data you cite, I'll revert to a state of total confusion regarding the character if the premium/discount. Perhaps there are simply too many variables to be able to rationalize the spread. There was some discussion a while back (when SFE was peaking) regarding a strategy of shorting the SFE big-caps as a hedge against a long position, which given the current spread would have been a profitable strategy. I may have to study that further if to see if a reverse strategy will work as well.
