China carves out its own Silicon Valley BEIJING, Oct 5 (Reuters) - China has unveiled plans for a home-grown ''Silicon Valley'' to kick-start the nation's fledgling technology sector, local media reported on Monday. According to the Beijing Economic Daily, the $170 million development zone would seek to attract American high-tech industries with a mixture of high-calibre human resources and investment perks. The plan has already received approval for investment in eight sectors, including software development, satellite-based mobile communications, electronic publishing, high-tech materials construction and security firewalls. Formed last year as a Sino-U.S. joint venture, the ''China Silicon Valley Project'' would also aim to become a premier high-tech research, development and training centre, the paper said. China has been seeking increased investment in its technology sector since it opened its markets to the world in the early 1980s. Last Friday the Ministry of Science and Technology announced a plan for a $240 million investment foundation to channel funds into high-tech industries. China currently has 13,000 high-tech enterprises in 53 industrial zones, official media have reported. --------------- Goodbye technology sector.
