AtHome, Intel Unveil Strategy
To Promote Digital Photos Online
By a WALL STREET JOURNAL Staff Reporter

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. -- AtHome Corp. and Intel Corp. are planning a joint effort to promote digital photography on the Web by using AtHome's high-speed Internet connections and Intel's digital-imaging technology.

The effort, to be announced Monday, is part of AtHome's plan to develop activities that require the service it provides through special modems connected to cable-television systems.

The use of digital photography online has been hampered by the slow transmission of pictures using standard telephone dial-up connections. For Intel, Santa Clara, Calif., the marketing effort is part of its strategy of encouraging the growth of activities that take advantage of its highest-performance microprocessors.

The site, "Making Pictures," will be accessible only to AtHome subscribers, and will enable users to e-mail photographs, add them to Web sites or create greeting cards. AtHome is seeking arrangements with traditional photo finishers to use the site for the distribution of digital versions of standard photographs.
