Michael:

I'm not sure of all the components of a cable-modem system... but correct me if I'm wrong here...

Modem - a device that converts analog signals to digital signals and vice-versa.

Signals from a networked computer/WWW server at the head-end are in digital form needing conversion to analog before being sent over the cable plant as an analog signal, "frequences - each channel is 6MHz". Once in the home the analog signal is converted to digital "1's and 0's" with a cable modem, and into your PC.

How does the Head-end of the cable plant get away with not needing a modem? Without a modem like device in the head-end/somewhere the signal will remain an analog signal, never being able to talk to another WWW computer.
