Looks good, anyone still out there?
ATMI Debuts New Q4D Venture for Semiconductor Gas Sensors

DANBURY, Conn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 5, 1998--

Signs Distribution Agreement with THT Sales for Product Introduction

ATMI, Inc. (Nasdaq: ATMI), today announced the launching of its latest ATMI Venture, Q4D. Q4D is the second of three pre-commercial business ventures currently in the ATMI Science portfolio. ATMI's Q4D venture is developing a family of innovative gas sensors to improve the productivity, throughput, efficiency, and safety in the semiconductor industry.

Peter Kirlin, ATMI Executive Vice President, said, "Q4D is the second ATMI Venture we've introduced; Emosyn, our fabless smartcard venture was the first. Q4D's business is developing and commercializing new metrology methods for semiconductor manufacturing. THT Sales, a premier semiconductor equipment and consumables representative agency headquartered in Dallas, Texas, just signed an agreement with ATMI to represent the Q4D family of gas sensors. THT was impressed by the initial customer response to Q4D's novel gas sensors coupled with their potential to add value to THT's current product lines."

Terry Tabler, Q4D Manager of Business Development, said, "Our application-specific semiconductor gas sensors assess exhaust, hazardous, process, or reactor gases. First to market is our Exhaust Hazard Sensor. We believe that the Q4D sensors will be able to offer markedly lower cost of ownership than other sensing products, will need no calibration, can provide proof positive of gas detection, and are user configurable.

Q4D sensors - using its patented NanoGrav(tm) technique - combine piezoelectric materials with ATMI's semiconductor thin film expertise to detect extremely low levels of entire families of hazardous gases. Q4D's product family includes Exhaust Hazard Sensors to measure process tool effluent, Hazardous Gas Monitors to help ensure life safety, Process Gas Monitors to improve semiconductor production uniformity, and Reactor Gas Monitors to make in-situ measurements to help optimize the production process.

The Q4D name represents the gas sensors' key attributes: "Q" quantifies and qualifies gas attributes, and "4D" assesses molecular properties in x, y, and z dimensions, over time. Q4D's logo represents its sensors' all encompassing quality process analysis, by comprehensive metrology.

ATMI provides products and services for semiconductor device manufacture, including thin film materials and delivery systems marketed through ADCS, environmental equipment marketed through EcoSys, thin film deposition services marketed through Epitronics, sub-atmospheric gas delivery systems marketed through NovaSource, and high-purity materials packaging systems marketed through NOW.
