Gateway sez: Zip No Good For Removable Storage.

Read it and weep, Iomaniacs:

techweb.com

"Gateway has decided, given current pricing, that Zip drives are no longer a good choice for removable storage. The company is instead pushing CD-ReWritable (CD-RW) drives, which write to CD-ROMs, audio CDs or reusable CD-RWs. The reasoning: Everybody's got a CD-ROM, so you can exchange data with virtually anyone using a CD-R."

Gateway is phasing out their Zip drives. This is now confirmed. First, it was Micron. Now it is Gateway that is droppin their Zips. Next will be Apple and then HP. The game is just about over, and Iomega is sinking deeper and deeper into $2 territory. CD-RW is the floppy replacement that came out of nowhere. And pretty soon, it will be EVERYWHERE. I know. I already have 2 CD-RW drives, and they work great and using them is a no-brainer.

Iomega has no CD drives. And Nomai? Naomi is a small-time player even in their native Europe who was forced to get into the CD-RW game late, and has no technology of its own. Nomai admits to being devastated by the CD-RW surge. CD-RW is a low margin business. And Iomega may be forced to become just another small-time 2-bit player in the non-proprietary realm of CD-RW. Iomega's market cap is about to become a lot smaller.
