Actually they are not so esoteric but quite logical.
Think support/resistence when looking at head and shoulder patterns.
And think convergence of long and short term moving averages when looking at pennants or flags. The convergence of this averages usually begins a substantial change in market direction (up or down).

Hope this helps, I've found this to be true enough to bank on it.
