Ahhaha - I didn't think my message was one of resentment - about the gold etc., - no the resentment about America was more to do with its late entry into the war (both wars in fact - 1917 and 1942) and the spate of movies after the war 'how we won the war single handed' - the feeling after the war was very strong - in France particularly for things like the complete bombardment and destruction of villages and towns before the troops were allowed to advance. I was in France in 52 and encountered this first hand. We've discusssed this before - on the GPM thread I think. The British made their share of stiff upper lip movies. It was hard for the British to adjust to the new reality.

All of this feeling has long gone.

The gold went to America for safe keeping (together with British securities - one of my friend's father was one of the so called '5 wise men' responsible for investing British assets in the States and Canada in the war - but I'm talking about the gold that stayed in the form of payment for lend lease. Following the war Britain was no longer a first rate power. There were of course other reasons and the loss of Empire followed on and would have happened anyway - but the war was a huge drain on the British, it almost goes without saying.. E
