Here's a few resources on the CFA program and some companies that offer materials to aid in preparing. Although they don't come cheap, it would seem that with such a high failure rate, it would be worth looking into a service that offers a structured program of study.

Probably the most vital element that such a broad self-study program lacks is an expert to ask the inevitable questions of, and a logical structure or flow from topic to topic. Imagine person "A" getting a list of books that corresponded to courses needed to get, say, an MBA, and then being told, "read the books, then come in and take a final exam." Then imagine person "B" that actually takes the classes and does the coursework leading to the final. If I had to bet which person would score higher on the final, "B" would get the nod easily. It doesn't guarantee "B" will pass, but "B" has MUCH better odds of passing than "A".

In fact, I'd bet that if an accredited, structured program were a requirement for the CFA, the success rate would go way up.
