The reason central banks still have plenty is that they can't get rid of the stuff without destroying the price. Many smaller holders like Canada and Australia have already dumped most of their gold and if the four biggest holders--U.S, France, Germany and Switzerland could find a way to do likewise, they would.

It's still in their vaults as a relic of the past.
