DTM emerges as a potential competitor for ATM

Abstracted from the article....
Dynarc and Net Insight share the
patents for Dynamic Transfer Mode, or
DTM, originally developed by Ericsson
Telecom and the Swedish Royal
Institute of Technology.

The technology was designed to
integrate with the Internet's existing IP
network. If it's adopted, the Internet
could handle voice traffic as reliably as
the public-telephone network and make
video transmissions more like viewing
television than old Super-8 home
movies.

DTM is a transport protocol that is
similar in concept to Asynchronous
Transfer Mode, or ATM, a transport
protocol intended to switch and
prioritize Internet traffic.

Like ATM, DTM uses a set of specialized
functions -- known collectively as
Quality of Service (QOS) -- to
guarantee that voice and video
transmissions arrive at their
destinations quickly. Unlike ATM,
however, DTM doesn't require entirely
new networking infrastructures to be
built for carrying voice and video in
addition to data.
