Wal-Mart says to open about 280 New Stores.
Wal-Mart's fiscal year begins Feb. 1. Its domestic division will open approximately 40 new discount stores and 150 new Supercenters. It also plans to expand its domestic Sam's Clubs with 10 to 15 store openings and six relocations. In addition to the relocations and expansions Wal-Mart said it will remodel a number of domestic stores.
The Wal-Mart statement did not say how many jobs the store openings would create. The company is the nation's largest private employer outside of the temporary help agencies. Officials were not immediately available for comment.
Internationally, Wal-Mart said it is opening 75 to 80 new stores and clubs in Argentina, Brazil, Canada, China, Korea, Mexico and Puerto Rico. These units include several formats such as restaurants, department stores and supermarkets in Mexico.
As of Sept. 30, the company had 1,879 Wal-Mart stores, 512 Supercenters, and 446 Sam's Clubs in the United States as well as 617 units outside the United States. Wal-Mart employs more than 780,000 associates in the U.S. and 115,000 internationally. |
