>>I have traded in and out of many short positions over the course of the year and my short portfolio is well ahead for the year.<<

Roger -

That's good to know. I can see by the responses I got previously that the header for this thread is misleading. I'm sorry for bringing up an issue that has doubtlessly been beaten to death already.

I have to say, I sure couldn't fault anyone for wanting to short, say, AMZN or YHOO at any point this year. I believe that they are both screaming to be shorted, though clearly it's very dangerous to do so with either of them.

I am glad that I have remained long on CTXS, though, since it is one of the reasons my small long portfolio is still well up for the year.

I have not yet taken the plunge with respect to shorting, largely because I've never felt I had enough cash to risk it by trying to time the market. Nor enough brains. The way the market has acted this year, I'm glad I've resisted the temptation.

Nonetheless, trading fascinates me, and I beleive knowing how and when to short is essential to successful trading.

Thanks for sticking your neck out and sharing your knowledge and experience on this thread.

- Allen
