For those who may have missed the Sprint PCS' press release announcing the launch of service in Pittsburgh, it is below. Just as a note, it appears Sprint PCS may not be issuing separate press releases for the launches of smaller cities such as Albany, N.Y. According to Sprint PCS, it is currently offering service in Syracuse, Utica, Schnectady, Troy, and Albany, N.Y.:

Sprint Digital Communications Service To Begin Pittsburgh's First
Digital PCS Service Monday, December 30

PR Newswire - December 27, 1996 12:00

The replacement for the cellular phone is here! Douglas C. Cotton, Sprint PCS Area Vice President, will meet with reporters at 9 a.m., Monday, December 30, at the new Sprint PCS retail store in the Northway Mall (next to Borders Books) on McKnight Road in Ross Township, to introduce the first and only 100 percent digital and 100 percent pure PCS service in the state of Pennsylvania.

The Pittsburgh region represents the largest eastern U.S. market in which Sprint PCS will begin service in 1996. This month, Sprint PCS initiated service in Fresno, CA; Milwaukee; Portland, OR; Spokane; San Diego, CA; and Albany, NY. Early next year, service will begin in the remainder of Sprint's 65 PCS markets, including New York, San Francisco, Dallas, Boston, Miami, Denver, Seattle and Kansas City.

According to Cotton, Sprint PCS is spending $100 million to get the Pittsburgh market up and running. "Sprint PCS," he noted, "is accomplishing in ten months what it took AT&T and Bell Atlantic NYNEX ten years to do."

The Sprint PCS wireless phone is manufactured by QUALCOMM, a joint venture between Sony Electronics and QUALCOMM. "This new phone, using our state-of-the-art technology," notes Cotton, "produces high quality, crystal clear conversations with total privacy of communications."

Cotton and some special guests will demonstrate the new Sprint PCS phone, explain its special attributes, and answer questions.
