Craig Zarley of Computer Reseller News has written a number of stories about Compaq and channel policies in the past few months. In late August he wrote about "Enterprise VARS get Price Protection break," saying the issue was "products held in inventory to satisfy contractural requirements of large accounts." In July he reported that Compaq promised VARS serving small biz more liberal returns, to avoid conflict with its DirectPlus program. (Sorry I don't have the links offhand--I'm sure these and other stories are archived on the CRN Web site.) If Zarley's right (and I think CRN is usually pretty accurate about channel issues), it seems that Compaq is stretching its rules for certain segments of its channel.
