American Home Products Not Making Enough Flu Vaccine, WSJ Says

Bloomberg News
October 6, 1998, 10:35 a.m. ET

Madison, New Jersey, Oct.6 (Bloomberg) -- American Home
Products Corp.'s production problems with its flu vaccine may
mean delays in supply of the vaccine this year, the Wall Street
Journal reported, citing the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention in Atlanta and company officials. The company's Wyeth-
Lederle division, one of two main flu vaccine producers along
with the Pasteur Merieux Connaught unit of Rhone-Poulenc SA of
France, informed purchasers it couldn't make enough vaccine from
A Beijing and A Sydney, two of the three flu strains that go into
this year's product. These two strains of influenza are most
likely to be prevalent this year, and Pasteur Merieux and two
smaller companies increased production to supply more vaccine by
later fall, the paper said.

Madison, New Jersey-based American Home Products and St.
Louis-based Monsanto Co. are in the process of completing a
proposed $35 billion merger.
