Fred..any one else?
The "solar shootout" was carried out by "Real Goods" who have a Renewable Energy Catalogue outlet second to none..I thought I was doing us a favour when I asked them why they sell only Nicad batteries rather then Nimh..and the response was not good..anyone able to help out here...?

"Thanks for the Cadmium input. We have sold NiMH
batteries for several years now, but we are phasing them out as they have been
slow sellers. We (and me personally) have had a lot of problem with them. They
tend to internal short often leading to instant death, they are expensive, they
self discharge quickly (in about a month), and they are tricky to recharge
properly. We offer our NiCad with a lifetime guarantee and encourage people to
return them for a free replacement. We then see to it that they get recycled
where virtually all of the Cadmium is recovered and reused. Of course, there's
always the folks that just throw them out without recycling - what can you do?"....
