Metricom Announces Successful Demonstration of
New Ricochet II High Speed Technology

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Gatos, Calif.
September 23, 1998

Metricom (Nasdaq: MCOM) today announced successful demonstration of its new
Ricochet II high speed wireless data technology in Metricom's Silicon Valley
test network. At this time 80 radios using this new technology are operational
and provide data rates equal to that provided by wired ISDN 128K service.

This new technology is designed to dramatically increase data speeds on the
Ricochet wireless network. It utilizes two bands of unlicensed spectrum: the
900 MHz band and the 2.4 GHz band. This is in addition to the licensed 2.3 GHz
Wireless Communications Services (WCS) spectrum which Metricom purchased in
1997. These new networks will be compatible with the company's existing
Ricochet networks and modems. The new technology will provide current Ricochet
subscribers with existing modems increased performance which will be comparable
to a wired 56K modem. Subscribers with the new Ricochet II modems will have
performance up to ISDN data rates. The new service will begin deployment in mid
1999.

Metricom believes that pushing the envelope on speed and performance is key to
maintaining the leadership position it has claimed in its category of wireless
portable data communications. The Ricochet II product will build upon and be
compatible with Metricom's current wireless data network which uses
spread-spectrum, frequency hopping, packet-data technology.
