<<With Watergate; the whole country was shocked and dismayed and it was near universal the feeling in the country>>

Not until after the tapes were released. Until we actually heard Nixon okay the coverup, there was just as much support for him as ever. The issue was completely partisan. Most of what we remember from Watergate (I remember it too - I also decided to go back and read some of the books from the time to refresh my memory - an interesting experience) is what came towards the end, not the process leading up to it.

Try this - assume for the sake of this discussion, that videotapes exist of Clinton and Monica, as well as of Clinton and his advisors planning the coverup. Assume that they are really damaging, and clearly show obstruction of justice, etc. etc. How do you think the country would react? Do you think the Democrats would continue to stick with BC? That's in effect what happened to Nixon.
