Huge news from AMD after the close today. They EARNED 1 cent per diluted share whereas analysts expected them to LOSE 11 cents per share. In addition, and perhaps more importantly, their sales rose 15% from a year ago. This could signal a bottom in the business cycle although AMD may have taken some business away from INTC. They also made positive comments about the fourth quarter and INTC said a few weeks ago that their sales will likely be better than analysts predicted. If INTC meets or exceeds analysts' forecasts, then one could conclude that the growth at AMD did not come at the expense of competitors. This would mean that business overall is growing although we won't know until INTC releases their earnings. I think analysts have cut their estimates too much for semiconductor companies, and many of the stocks, including VLSI, have yet to discount better earnings than the estimates. If so, we could be in for a big rally.
