SANs (Storage Area Networks) are of big interest to a variety of people. Sun better not be afraid of these networks since they look like they are inevitable.

A SAN allows for better use of bandwidth, and more direct access to storage devices. The server is still involved, but mostly in an authentication and access control role. The client has to get a "ticket" from the server and then uses that ticket when communicating directly with the storage devices. Directly attaching storage devices to the network allows them to bypass some of the limitations in todays computer bus architectures.

Also, Garth Gibson at CMU has been doing some really interesting work in this area ... ece.cmu.edu

This is a "wave" of the future ...
