So, Sony HiFD is just about upon us. We all knew this would happen, of course.

What's odd to me, though, is that there is no slimline version of HiFD to be used internally in notebooks. Can someone explain to me the advantage of having an external drive that's backward-compatible?

But seriously, HiFD does look like a good, or even great product, although it is very late to market. It does stand a good chance of becoming the next standard, if pricing is right. And if anyone can miniaturize the thing to the point where it can be installed internally in notebooks, Sony can.

We'll just have to wait and see how it does in the real world.
