GM to discontinue Oldsmobile Cutlass

DETROIT, Oct 5 (Reuters) - General Motors Corp. said on
Monday that its Oldsmobile division will discontinue production
of the Cutlass following the 1999 model year as part of its plans
to eliminate several models and become more competitive.
"'99 will be the last year for the Cutlass," spokesman
Randy Fox told Reuters.
The Cutlass, launched in early 1996, was intended for a
short life while Oldsmobile transformed itself, Fox said.
The Oklahoma City manufacturing plant which makes the
Cutlass and the Chevrolet Malibu will be converted to make only
Malibus, Fox said.
GM said in August it would eliminate several current models
and introduce new models in a bid to become more competitive. The
world's largest automaker has already announced plans to
discontinue the Oldsmobile 88 and the Buick Riviera full-sized
sedans and it is considering cutting the Chevrolet Prizm.
