The reason to run from "Wavelets" is that it is often used as a marketing gimmick to say "special ingredient that did what no other compression scheme could do."

Wavelets and motion compensation are strange bedfellows.

It's just a cheap encoder, like Captian Crunch. I bet MPEG gives the same picture quality in 2.5 to 3 mbit/sec. It's all or nothing with an MPEG encoder (half-assed gives you half).
