You are right, first learn a lot. That is one of the reasons of starting this thread ;-)

I don't think I have that much time; as I want to buy gold coins for a worst case Y2k scenario ('hope for the best; prepare for the worst').

So the important thing for me is to buy coins that can be used best in a worst case scenario, where quite an amount of bartering will occur (see price of gold thread; 'Edwards 7-10 scenarios'.

The spread mentioned by you does not seem that large to me.
