Preliminary Analysis Neurosurgeon Point of View: 1-Mortality Reduction 26% slightly better than thought and of outcome importance. 2-Significant reduction in increased intracranial pressure(ICP},as stated this point alone reducing ICP above stated threshold of 25mmHg.This alone is a very important factor in the care of the head injury victim and would indicate the use of Hu-211 in all cases of severe head trauma. 3-The fact that there is no concomittant reduction in systolic blood pressure is of massive importance, the combination of head trauma and shock (lower blood pressure)increases the mortality and morbidity of head trauma since low blood pressure decreases cerebral perfusion. Better blood pressure 13% in the treated group vs 38% in the placebo group,could indicate a factor that may help in the mgt of shock (the latter observation is personal). 4-Improved Neurological outcomes was consistently seen amonf the most severly injured patients (Lower Glasgow Scale Group}. The higher group of Glasgow Scale patient or the least severe had similar outcomes at the six month evaluation. Thi is to be expected 5 Finally the product is safe in adults and children. In summary if the above data is correct without question HU-211 will be an important tool in the armamentarium available in the managment of the severe head injury. Notice that the report did not discuss the mechanism of action of the product,perhaps this is discussed in the paper. This is important in considering the efficacy in other conditions such as strokes etc. Finally as a neurosurgeon the fact that it lowers and aids in the managment of increased intracranial pressure it probably will be indicated in the postoperative complications of Brain Surgery characterized by brain swelling or edema ex brain tumors ,aneurysms etc. Sorry about the length of the post but I'm excited to no end.
