08:44 ET Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) 19 5/8: Chip maker
posted a Q3 net of $0.01 a share, well ahead of the First Call mean estimate
for a loss of $0.11 a share, vs year-ago loss of $0.22 a share. However, stock
trading lower in pre-market. Not necessarily surprise, because 1) AMD ran up in
advance of earnings, as investors/analysts were expecting an upside surprise,
and 2) AMD estimates have become meaningless. Because company has disappointed
for so long, analysts have no idea what AMD will make on a quarterly basis. For
example, estimate this qtr ranged from a loss of $0.26 to breakeven. Next qtr
the range is from a loss of $0.11 to $0.24. AMD simply doesn't have visibility.
As late as December, analysts were expecting company to make $3.00 a share for
'98. That estimate has now fallen to a loss of $0.89.
