gfr fan,
Good analysis. I agree. COMS will struggle but will win by attrition, IF THEY EXECUTE. What's happening with some of the higher end products, sophisticated Lan/Wan equipment was/is, happening to the modem sector, IMO.
COMS has been the last survivor of the modem wars, and will now reap the benefit of market share and being the only real survivor. Other network products will go through the same process, though network products will/should give higher margin returns, IMO.
I see part of our job as just toughening out for the long haul. The end result will be a much stronger COMS, more market share, and dominating more products in most networked environments.
As I've said before, I'm more worried about the market and economy at this point. COMS fundamentals have turned the corner so far. If '99 is recession or major slowdown as Greenspan indicated this morning (I'm going start calling him Doomspan), then times may get very bumpy.
In the end, COMS will be a survivor.
BTW...Japan up over 6%. If they actually pass some real legislation and pump $$ into their sh*t banks, they may help tremendously. Already Yen is at ~124 to the $ this morning...unreal move. Very positive IMO. Will it last???? |
