The KOT concept works with SCSI drives too.

What about a SCSI primary and an IDE KOT?
Would that work or be too convoluted for a Greenhorn?

To use an IBM drive with 7200rpm and less than 10 (or 9?) gigs in volume... only SCSIs are available. (I looked at the Ultrstar 9ES 4.5 gig.) And since, as you say, the KOT drive itself does not need the performance of the primary
but reliability would be desirable..... so use an IBM IDE 5400rpm for KOT, like the DEskstar 8 8.4 gig.

If this is a feasable solution I could also utilize the SCSI adapter for cd_rom now and cd-rw or DVD later.

Your thoughts are, as always, greatly appreciated.
