Harvey, I think the handsets mostly being sold are dual mode, so even though CDMA service isn't available in all those cities, they can use the analog function. It's all hard work at the moment though with these "roaming" agreements. Companies are going to have to come up with a go anywhere service with no mucking about. People don't want to land in a country and then muck about getting their phone to work.

Globalstar handles that, but they are going to have to get international numbers working, like Visa cards work everywhere - you don't have to register the card when you go somewhere.

The telecoms world is just coming out of the stone age. Which is great for Qualcomm because they are right there and own the rights to the new tools.

Vancouver and Seattle have half baked systems installed for CDMA but I don't think they are "commercial" yet. I think Toronto also has one planned, but hadn't heard of Montreal.

NO GO ZONE FOR RAMSEY SU FOLLOWS::::::::::::::::::::::::

Being sort of French, I'm surprised they are coming out of the barbarian age just yet. Yeah, they really do think they are French, even though their grandparents were born in Canada!!! They are threatening to go independent. The rest of Canada should not give them a choice but make them go, call their silly bluff, then put a big fence up on the border!!! The Eastern States could join the USA if they got lonely. Of course the Indians in Quebec are saying "hey, hang on, this is OUR place and we are staying in Canada!!!"

What a pathetic crowd the nationalistic tribalists are!!!

Reform the UN and make it a wireless, borderless world eventually.
Maurice

PS: hey, I see Chris posted just before me. I'll go read now.

Okay, great - it works. Thanks for telling us that Chris. It's quite interesting that you just take your phone in for a checkup and software upgrade. Sort of completes the IBM/Microsoft analogy. Maybe $140bn market cap is on the modest side for Qualcomm. Can't you just plug your phone into the web for a software upgrade?

I'm so envious of all you people running around with CDMA phones. They do seem expensive though at $0.25 per minute.

But it won't be long before analog dies off by the sound of it.
