Sony undoubtedly knows this. They probably haven't yet been able to get the HiFD working in a small enough form-factor to fit into notebooks, although of course they eventually will. Despite what some people may think, producing HiFD drives is not a simple matter of some minor re-tooling of floppy drive production lines. The HiFD is quite a different and much more complex beast. If this were not so, it would have been here long ago.

Sony can't wait to at least get the product into the marketplace, because time is running out. So they have to go with what they currently have working.

What I think they should do is to get a USB HiFD out in a hot minute. Imac users would LOVE to have them, assuming that Sony could get around the problems that are bedevilling the USB LS-120.
